Soft and fluffy breadsticks topped with a delectable parmesan cheese mixture! Inspired by the popular Pizza Hut breadsticks, these breadsticks are a delicious homemade version made entirely from scratch!
If you’ve ever been to Pizza Hut, you know their breadsticks are a popular favorite! I loved them growing up and now enjoy making them from scratch. They taste much better when they’re made fresh at home and they’re surprisingly very easy to make with a few simple ingredients and seasonings.
Why you’ll love these breadsticks:
- Extra flavorful from the additional seasonings in the dough
- It requires only 1 rise & if you let it rise in a warm area, then it’ll rise faster. The sooner it rises, the sooner you can bake & devour them!
- The dough is prepared in less than 15 minutes and bakes in less than 15 minutes too!
- The entire process from start to finish can be done without fancy equipment.
The bread:
This dough is incredibly easy to make! Everything can be done by hand or a stand mixer if you have one and prefer to use it. The best part about these breadsticks is that the dough is seasoned with garlic powder and onion powder. It’s a subtle addition compared to plain breadstick dough but it makes a huge difference! The seasonings add incredible flavor and really elevate the overall taste of the breadsticks!
The topping:
In my experience from eating Pizza Hut breadsticks, the strongest flavor on the topping comes from the parmesan cheese! Since oregano, garlic powder, and onion powder have strong tastes, I added them in small amounts to preserve the flavor of the cheese. This way you get a taste of the oregano, garlic powder, and onion powder without missing out on the deliciousness of the parmesan cheese!

Pizza Hut Inspired Breadsticks
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 1 cup (240 ml) warm water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ tsp or 7g)
- 1 tbsp (15 ml) oil
- 3 cups (390 g) all purpose flour
- 1.5 tsp salt
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
For the topping:
- 3 tbsp (42 g) melted unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup (35 g) grated parmesan cheese
- 1.5 tbsp oregano
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it rest for a few minutes so the yeast activates and becomes foamy.
- Once the yeast has proofed, add in the oil and the flour mixture. Mix everything together to form a shaggy/cohesive dough.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for a few minutes until it becomes smooth. Dough is ready when you gently press down on it with a finger and it springs back up. Let the dough rest for about 10 minutes and in the meantime, grease a 9 x 13 baking sheet with either butter or oil and set aside.
- Roll the dough into a 9 x 13 rectangle and then transfer it to the prepared baking sheet. Spread a little bit of oil on top of the dough, tightly cover, and let it rest for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- After it doubles in size, use a knife or bench scraper to score and cut into 12 strips while it's still in the baking sheet. Be careful not to deflate the dough. Preheat oven to 450℉ and bake for about 11-12 minutes, until golden brown.
- In the meantime, prepare the topping by mixing together the parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano. When the breadsticks are done, remove from the oven, brush with melted butter, and immediately top with the cheese mixture.
- Cut along the score lines to separate breadsticks and serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce!
