Honey Sesame Chicken

Crispy and tender fried chicken pieces tossed in a perfectly sweet and savory honey ginger sauce! Made with simple pantry ingredients, this honey sesame chicken is an incredibly easy and insanely delicious restaurant style meal to make at home.

The Chicken

The chicken is cut into small pieces and marinated in a few spices and soy sauce. To keep the recipe quick and simple, the chicken is coated in a mixture of flour and cornstarch before frying. A wet batter isn’t necessary since the chicken is already seasoned and all the flavors develop from the chicken and sauce together.

Then the chicken is fried until golden and crispy. I always prefer to shallow fry instead of deep fry since it makes the chicken perfectly crispy without using & wasting excess oil! You can always do a double fry for extra crispy chicken if you wish, but it’s not necessary.

The Sauce

The honey sesame sauce tastes incredible & takes just a few minutes to come together. I like a bit of gravy so I make a bigger batch of the sauce than usual. This way every piece of chicken is nicely coated with sauce and you still have more to serve with! You can do the same by doubling the quantities for the sauce ingredients.

The chicken has savory ingredients so the sauce is on the sweeter side using a combination of ketchup, honey, and brown sugar. It also includes fresh garlic and ginger which add warmth and amazing depth of flavor to the sauce, making it much more enjoyable and satisfying!

Flavored Nice
Total Time 40 minutes
Servings 3 -4 people

Ingredients

The chicken:

  • about 1.5 lbs boneless & skinless chicken cut into small pieces
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 2.5 tbsp soy sauce (preferably low sodium)
  • salt to taste
  • 3/4 cup (95 g) all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp corn starch

The sauce:

  • 1 tbsp garlic – minced
  • 1/2 tbsp ginger – minced
  • 1/3 cup (80 ml) water
  • 1/3 cup (90 g) ketchup
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

To garnish:

  • sesame seeds
  • green onions

Instructions

The chicken:

  • Marinate the chicken with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and soy sauce. Please note that soy sauce is already salty so be careful not to add too much salt.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch with all purpose flour.
  • Take each piece of chicken and coat with the flour mixture, making sure to cover all sides and shake off any excess.
  • To a pan over medium heat, add enough oil to cover half of the depth of the chicken. Add a few pieces of the chicken and fry for 3-4 minutes, then flip and cook for a few more minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and golden and crispy on all sides. Avoid over-crowding the pan and work in small batches if necessary.
  • Set the fried chicken pieces on a wire rack to cool as you finish frying.

The sauce:

  • In a bowl or cup, combine the water, ketchup, honey, and brown sugar and set aside.
  • Heat a little oil in a pan or wok over medium heat, add the ginger and garlic and fry for a few seconds until fragrant.
  • Then pour in the sauce and simmer for a few minutes until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  • Toss in the chicken and mix to coat well. Leave on low heat for a minute to let everything come together.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions, serve & enjoy!
