They’re so simple to make and require 6 basic ingredients…milk, sugar, yeast, flour, salt, and butter. Everything comes together to create a smooth dough that bakes into the most comforting, tender, and satisfying bread rolls.
The recipe is super beginner friendly and and you can do it all by hand from start to finish! No expertise or fancy equipments necessary! From the golden brown exteriors to the tender and fluffy interiors with a delicious, sweet, buttery taste….these are literally made to perfection!
You can also make 12 larger buns instead of 15 medium/smaller ones as shown here. Baking times may vary slightly. You know bread is ready when the tops are golden brown and you hear a hollow sound when you tap on the bottom.
Notes & Tips
- Dough becomes softer as you knead it so avoid the urge to add flour while you knead.
- Use a kitchen scale if you have one for more accurate measurements. Otherwise use the spoon & level method to measure the flour.
- Set the dough in a warm spot in your house to help it rise faster
- You can switch out the active dry yeast for instant yeast if you’re familiar with it.
- I brushed the dough balls with milk but you can use an egg wash instead if you wish.
- To quickly soften butter, microwave for just a few seconds until it’s no longer firm and can be squished between your fingers without melting or losing its shape

Soft Dinner Rolls
Ingredients
- 1 cup + 3 tbsp (285 ml) warm milk
- 3 tbsp (45 g) white sugar
- 1 tbsp active dry yeast
- 3 & 1/2 cups (455 g) all purpose flour spooned & leveled
- 1.5 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup (76 g) unsalted butter – softened
Instructions
- In a large bowl, add the milk, sugar, and yeast. Mix together and let it sit for 5 minutes, until the yeast activates and becomes frothy.
- Then add the flour, salt, and softened butter and combine everything to form a shaggy dough ball.
- Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead for at least 5 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. It's ready when you gently press down on it with a finger and it bounces back or when it passes the window pane test (tear off a little piece of dough and stretch it very thinly between your fingers to check if light passes through without the dough tearing).
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, tightly cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise for 30-45 minutes, until it doubles in size.
- Then gently punch down the dough and divide into 15 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a smooth round ball and place onto a 9 x 13 baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between them.
- Lightly spray with cooking spray, cover and let them rise for 1 hour. Towards the end of the waiting time, preheat the oven to 350℉ (176℃).
- When they're ready, brush them with milk and then bake for 20-22 minutes, until golden brown on top. (place them in the middle or lower rack to avoid burning the tops)
- When they're fresh out of the oven, top with honey butter or garlic butter if desired, serve and enjoy warm!
